The 2019 Daihatsu Thor is a compact mini MPV that strikes a strong balance between city-friendly dimensions, efficiency, and practicality. With its 1.0-litre engine, automatic transmission, and modern safety features, it’s ideal for drivers in Nairobi or other Kenyan cities who want something small on the outside but roomy and capable on the inside.
Under the hood, many Thor models use the 996 cc 1KR-FE 3-cylinder petrol engine, producing about 69 PS and 92 Nm of torque, paired with a CVT automatic. This setup delivers smooth acceleration for urban speeds, decent fuel economy, and manageable running costs. For versions with a turbo (as in the Custom G Turbo), power is higher and performance enhanced, particularly when overtaking or entering highways.
Inside, the Thor accommodates five passengers with a surprisingly spacious cabin given its compact footprint of around 3.70 m in length and 1.67 m in width. The wheelbase of 2,490 mm helps with stability and interior space, especially in the rear seats. Features in many trims include air conditioning, power windows, power steering, alloy wheels, and entertainment options such as AM/FM stereo and sometimes more advanced infotainment or smart keys in higher-end trims.
Safety is well addressed for this class. Standard gear includes driver and front-passenger airbags, ABS with Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD), traction control or stability control in many trims. Some versions carry higher-level safety aids like Daihatsu’s Smart Assist systems that bring features such as automatic braking, lane departure warnings, and pedestrian detection.
